Haematococcus lacustris (formerly Haematococcus pluvialis) is a freshwater, unicellular microalga with a complex lifecycle. Haematococcus lacustris is a rich source of natural astaxanthin (an antioxidant), so important for aquaculture and cosmetics industries due to anti-inflammatory properties. The cells are normally green but under stress conditions, the cells change to larger globular cysts with an orange-red pigmentation.
