Amoeba borokensis is a protist ideally suited for study due to its recognisable internal structures, ease of culture and quick generation time. Amoebas are not photosynthetic, they feed by capturing bacteria and other organisms with cytoplasmatic extensions called pseudopodia. You can see Amoeba borokensis pseudopodia in this culture, this Amoeba is closely related to Amoeba proteus.

Division/Phylum: Amoebozoa
Class: Tubulinea
CCAP Ref: CCAP 1503/7
Required Medium: PC
Environment: Freshwater

30ml pack size, suitable for 30 students.

Store at room temperature (14-24°C) away from direct sunlight. Shake before pipetting onto slide & viewing under microscope.

Please note that Amoeba needs feeding if it is not to be used within the week of receipt (it is fed weekly, and we feed it on the morning of despatch). If the culture is to be kept for a week or more before using then we can send a tube of food (a ciliate, Tetrahymena) with feeding instructions. A vial of Tetrahymena mean the amoeba can be kept for up to 3 weeks. Please choose from the drop down menu whether you would like the Amoeba on its own or with a tube of food.
