Spirulina subsalsa is a Cyanobacteria, this means that it is a prokaryote organism contrary to all the other algae, which are eukaryotic. Cyanobateria are called blue-green algae, but they are actually photosynthetic bacteria. Cyanobacteria are used in many commercial applications, such as a natural blue food colouring in sweets such as Smarties. Spirulina is filamentous with a striking spiral/helix shape along the entire length. It benefits from symbiotic bacteria that fix nitrogen from air. Spirulina is also used commercially as a health food due to its high nutritional content.
